Indeed, who does not? If reliable success in turning a book or original screenplay into a box office and critical hit could be bottled like Coca-Cola, then that recipe would probably be kept in a safe. We could take the secret formula out of the strongbox and tell you what it is, both qualitatively and quantitatively, in exact measure …but then we’d have to kill you. Fortunately -or maybe unfortunately, depending on one’s perspective- the Magic Formula cannot be so easily described. Yet, intangible though Zee Formula may be, here are some of the core values we promise, aver, and swear you will receive with NovaQuest:

  • A positive vision of a passionate life, evolving society, vibrant nature, and extraordinary future world worth fighting for, loving, and enjoying life in; championing kindness and compassion over cruelty and nihilism, gentle strength over coarse brutality, intelligence over ignorance, grace over vulgarity.
  • Action dedicated to entertainingly meaningful purpose; no tedious chase scenes, grandiose bunches of stuff blowing up, and violence just for the sake of violence.
  • Engaging and personal themes dynamically energizing interesting characters in stories which never demand excessively bending the laws of physics (for SciFi) and/or the reality of human nature (for Fantasy).
  • Treatments honoring the original author’s vision while modernizing aspects and engaging viewers in ways which leave the hardcore fans cheering with elation instead of being disappointed and/or furious.
  • Always giving credit where credit is due; being open to other perspectives and being both professional and flexible. This, to the point where the quality of the enterprise will not become significantly compromised, only, and not past that point in working with directorial styles and production realities.
  • A treasure trove of Science Fiction & Fantasy masterworks somehow not yet translated to movie format; we have an in-depth knowledge of untapped gems in these genre.
  • Inside tracks and secret weapons via which we have special access to several different proprietary SF&F universes (for reals, honestly, but do please hurry up because some of these folks are already elderly and will not be around forever.)
  • Contacts within the motion picture industry, from storyboard and FX artists to acting and directing talent to grips, drone-operator cameramen, and post-production professionals. We know folks in the biz. Lots of ‘em.

The whole is greater than the sum of its parts, with movie-making. The science of film mechanics is extremely well-understood. The patterns of successful storytelling, likewise; please take a look at MythMatrix to see our understanding of these aspects. After-the-fact economic analyses of movies which succeeded vs those that did not, broken apart by genre, budget, and so on also sheds some guiding light, yet none of these insights really completely illuminate Zee Magic Formula. While our part in the process of creating a hit is only one portion of a very large and complex team effort, it is an absolutely essential, critical, part. There is no success unless the effort starts with a winning story translated into a winning vision and articulated in a winning manner. Therein resides the magic we bring: the personal touch we have developed over a lifetime of studying and loving both SF&F literature and quality movies. Given the remarkable gems of SciFi & Fantasy which have not yet found translation into movie format, the low cost of new technology which allows so much to be done with so little, creative Indie investor financing approaches & crowd-sourced funding options, and the abundance of fine acting talent available it amazes us that the industry churns out such a high ratio of boring, idiotic, violent, and redundantly formulaic SF&F movies each year instead of the better –and more profitable—treatments they could have so easily been! This disconnect and fragmented industry shortcoming really is a failure of imagination and a missed opportunity for financial and artistic success. NovaQuest Media will not make these mistakes.
